Commodore PET
1979
The PET was one of the first machines to come as a fully integrated computer, incorporating a small mono monitor and cassette deck for storage. A disk drive was also available. The top very substantial steel of the casing lifted up for easy access to the motherboard, much like a car bonnet!
Atari 400 Atari had previously been a manufacturer of arcade machines and dedicated games consoles, the 400 was their first home computer. One of the first machines with high resolution graphics, and bundled with the game 'Star Raiders', it was an instant hit. Games could be loaded from tape or cartridges could be plugged in.
Sinclair ZX81
1981
The ZX81 followed on from the success of the ZX80. Although it had limited memory (1k) and a membrane keyboard, it was a phenomenally successful machine, and sold over one million units. Peripherals included a 16k memory expansion pack and a low cost printer.
Sinclair Spectrum
1982
Sinclair's' first colour computer the Spectrum was eagerly awaited. Available with 16k of memory for £125 or 48k for £175, the Spectrum was the most successful British computer ever. The original version had a rubber keyboard that was not terribly popular. Many classic games were originally written for the Spectrum, including Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy.
